Treatment for SAD

There is a combination of treatment which is right for every SAD sufferer to help bring the symptoms under control. For most people diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder, light therapy is the most effective treatment and the least invasive but for others a combination of medication and other forms of treatment may be required before SAD symptoms are brought fully under control.

Be sure and obtain Professional medical advice about any treatment you wish to follow through your own doctor or SAD clinic. There are also a number of self-help strategies which may be used in consultation with your doctor which will help alleviate the symptoms of SAD.

The range of treatments and ways to handle the condition include:-

  • Light Therapy
  • Medication
  • Psychotherapy and counselling
  • Stress Management and relaxation
  • Diet
  • Sleep regulation
  • Exercise
  • Environmental changes

Explore some of these in the relevant sections on the site. You will find information about Light Therapy, Medication, Psychotherapy, Exercise, Diet and Environmental changes here and much more comprehensive information in Coping with SAD.

The important thing is to get as much professional help as you can from a medical practitioner experienced in dealing with SAD and to keep searching with their help until you find the right solution for you. Sometimes it's better to start getting help before the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder descend - if you can arrange it, take action towards the end of summer rather than leaving things until later.
