Is Blue Light better than white light for SAD ?

Some of the manufacturers are marketing blue light as more effective than white but it may not be the best choice.

White light has had a long track record in the treatment of SAD and is known to be both safe for most people and to provide benefit in some 75 to 80% of cases over a number of decades.

Blue light has not yet been categorically proven to be either safe or effective in the same way and there has actually been some doubt cast about whether blue light may actually be harmful to the eyes.

Experiments are underway with blue light but a lot more testing is needed to reach any kind of valid conclusion.

Until there is conclusive scientific proof (independent of manufacturers who are trying to sell it) that blue light is the way to go, experts think it is a better option to go with standard white light therapy for your treatment.

Of course this may change as experiments are completed and further evidence emerges so keep an eye out for news about the effects of blue and white light. There is research being conducted worldwide on Seasonal Affective Disorder as it has only relatively recently achieved recognition as the serious illness it can be and we still have a lot to learn about the condition, its causes and treatment.
