Can a sunbed help SAD ?
Although a sunbed may make you feel better, it's not the best choice for the treatment of SAD.
The bright light emitted by a sunbed is high in the ultra-violet light required to produce a tan. Using a sunbed for long periods may burn the skin or eyes and carries an increased risk of skin cancer. The kind of light used in light boxes for SAD treatment contains little or no ultra-violet or has the ultra-violet filtered out for this very reason.
If you undergo light therapy to treat seasonal affective disorder, you generally sit in front of a light box for anything from 30 minutes to several hours every day. This far exceeds the amount of time you should spend using a sun bed.
Some SAD sufferers HAVE reported feeling better after tanning salon treatments, but you should not use a sunbed on a regular basis if you want to look after your skin and your general health. Much better to use a fake tanning product to give your skin a golden glow too!
